Things to do in Sydney

Here's how we spent our time in the delightful Sydney.

Friday 25th July

The day we arrived - we checked in and then we spent the afternoon in Darling Harbour and ate at the King Street Brewhouse. (We ate here a few times, it was a nice atmosphere with a heated terrace right on Darling Harbour.)

Saturday 26th July

We basically spent the day exploring Sydney by foot, being winter we did need a jumper. As Mr Daffy hadn't bought a jumper (ignoring my advice) the first thing we need to do was shop. So off we went shopping at Westfield Shopping Centre and The Rocks market. Jumpers and sweatshirts bought we headed off to the Circular Quay to soak up the atmosphere.

From the back of the Royal Opera House you can make your way into the Royal Botanic Garden - but beware - it shuts early. So having made our way through the garden we found the gate was shut and we had to walk all the way back to the Royal Opera House - oh well good exercise!

We ate at the Royal Opera House terrace bar on the patio underneath the building.

Sunday 27th July

We spent the day in Darling Harbour visiting the Aquarium and Australian Maritime Museum. At the Maritime Museum you can go on board a submarine and go aboard a replica of the Endeavour, where staff give you an interesting guided tour.

Had a lovely dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe Sydney, very friendly staff.

Monday 28th July

We went on a Sydney Harbour lunchtime cruise - this involved a lunchtime buffet and a four hour trip around the harbour, sailing under the bridge. You did have the option to get off after two hours but we stayed on board. So we had the first two hours inside and then sat outside for the second two hours. Here are views of Sydney Harbour from the water.

Tuesday 29th July

Walked up to The Rocks to sort out and book Bridge Climb for the Thursday. Wandered around Hyde Park and had a leisurely lunch in Darling Harbour. Spent the evening at the fabulous stage production of Baz Luhrmann's Stictly Ballroom. I really hope they bring this to London as I want to see it again. It was on at the Sydney Lyric Theatre and is a real feel good show.

Wednesday 30th July

Took the ferry over to Manley from the Circular Quay. It was a lovely sunny day and we chilled out on the beach.

Thursday 31st July

Bridge Climb day. Here is the website. If you want to do this but are worried - be reassured this is an extremely well organised and safe expedition to the top of Sydney Harbour Bridge - I was terrified but I needn't have been. Allow 3 hours for the experience and enjoy the privilege of climbing an awesome structure with some of the best city views in the world.
